Soil Steps is the research blog and professional doctorate project of George Peart, a researcher at IBERS, Aberystwyth University. It explores how grazing management affects soil biology and soil carbon, with a focus on whether changes in microbial and nematode communities can help explain the varied carbon outcomes reported from regenerative grazing. The project aims to incorporate these biological insights into improved carbon models and test the science behind claims about grazing systems.
Through research updates, field notes and community content, Soil Steps shares investigations into practical farming questions, including winter bale grazing and the measurement of hedgerow carbon. The work draws on Peart’s more than five years advising UK farmers on herd and soil health, as well as his background in veterinary medicine, livestock research, agribusiness and sustainability consulting. Alongside the doctorate, Peart is building an AI startup intended to help farmers track their transition to regenerative agriculture and connect with funding opportunities.
