SolmuPolku

SolmuPolku is a Finnish mathematics education brand that helps children understand numbers by making them visible and tangible. Developed and tested in Finnish classrooms since 2014, its approach supports learners who find number concepts and calculation challenging. Rather than relying on repeated counting or memorization, SolmuPolku uses visual patterns to build subitization—the ability to recognize small quantities without counting—and develop flexible number sense.

Learning combines hands-on activities with seeing, explaining, reasoning, and discussing different ways to solve problems. The materials are designed for use at school or at home by families, teachers, schools, and municipalities, including in classroom instruction, tutoring, and learning support.

SolmuPolku offers concrete teaching tools such as Number Quantity Pieces and the Satatalo place-value resource, as well as downloadable and digital materials, lesson plans, number cards, and story-based resources. Some materials are available free of charge. Its Solmutuokiot provide a structured learning path, and the brand also offers schools and municipalities implementation support and teacher training.
