Solobservatoriet is a historic astronomical site in Norway being developed into a destination for astro-tourism and a national centre for science communication. Its goal is to help visitors experience space and astronomy through activities, learning and observation. While the site is currently closed to general visitors, courses, exhibitions and activities are expected to take place there from autumn 2025, with opportunities to explore its protected historic buildings. Astronomy courses are announced through Astronomen.no.
The development is planned in seven phases, progressing from outdoor activities and heritage visits to a telescope platform, overnight stays, outdoor recreation and a knowledge centre for school camps. Later stages include expanded accommodation and a planetarium. The planned visitor centre and planetarium, designed by Snøhetta, will combine architecture with the surrounding landscape and astronomy-inspired design. Solobservatoriet also offers the book Nattehimmelen, a guide to the night sky featuring maps, observing advice, astronomical events and information about the Sun and Moon. Visitors can follow the project’s progress through its social channels and newsletter.
