About Sonoma Biochar Initiative
The Sonoma Biochar Initiative (SBI) is a California-based program founded in 2009 as a project of the Sonoma Ecology Center. It works to turn forest and agricultural residues into biochar, supporting wildfire resilience, carbon sequestration, and healthier soils. SBI describes itself as California’s longest-running biochar education initiative and reports more than 65 projects and demonstrations across the state.
Its work spans forest fuel reduction, agricultural soil improvement, emissions research, education, and the development of community-scale pyrolysis infrastructure. The initiative partners with agencies and organizations including CAL FIRE, the USDA, California’s Department of Water Resources, and the California Department of Food and Agriculture. Activities include workshops, webinars, school programs, field demonstrations, and research comparing emissions from different biomass-burning methods.
SBI also supports biochar and compost applications on farms, ranches, and vineyards. Its projects include plans for greener schoolyards, with shade trees, outdoor classrooms, bioswales, and biochar incorporated into soil treatments. The initiative shares resources, project updates, and opportunities for farmers, foresters, land managers, researchers, and community members to participate in building California’s biochar future.
