Sonomind is a MedTech company developing an ultrasound-based approach to treating depression. Drawing on 25 years of research, the company aims to provide a rapid, non-invasive and precise therapeutic option, particularly for people whose depression has not responded to medication. Its technology uses transcranial ultrasound stimulation to target deep brain regions associated with depression. A patient-specific acoustic metalens is designed to compensate for sound distortions caused by the skull and support millimetre-level targeting. Sonomind says its technology builds on research from the Physmed laboratory and relies in part on three patents, software and expertise licensed exclusively from INSERM.
The company reports early clinical findings from five patients with severe, treatment-resistant depression: symptoms fell by 61% after five days of treatment. These preliminary results are presented alongside comments from a psychiatrist involved in the work; they do not establish the treatment’s effectiveness for all patients.
