Sony Music Italy has a rich history dating back to the 1950s when RCA Italiana was established in Rome as the Italian branch of the prestigious American record label. Over the next two decades, RCA Italiana, led by legendary managers such as Ennio Melis, Nanni Ricordi, and Vincenzo Micocci, and working with exceptional producers like Luis Bacalov, Piero Piccioni, and Ennio Morricone, produced and launched the majority of artists who shaped the history of contemporary music and Italian singer-songwriting. They also created notable soundtracks for the remarkable era of Italian cinema in the 1960s and 1970s, and acquired important Italian labels like Dischi Ricordi-Produttori Associati and Numero Uno.

In the meantime, CBS, another prestigious American record label previously managed in Italy by CGD and Sugar, also established its presence in Italy in 1977, building a roster of top-tier artists in the following decade. In the 1980s, RCA and CBS were respectively acquired by BMG Ariola and Sony Music from Japan, merging into one major record label in 2004. Today, within Sony Music Italy, the three historic labels from this illustrious past, Columbia, Epic, and Numero Uno, continue to operate.
