Soto Zen is a prominent lineage of Zen Buddhism that aims to transmit the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha through generations. Established in North America by Rev. Hosen Isobe in 1922, it has roots in Japan where it was founded by Koso Dogen and Taiso Keizan Zenji, with Eiheiji and Sojiji serving as its primary temples. The Soto Zen Buddhism North America Office was formed in 1937 and plays a crucial role in promoting the faith, offering a wide array of services including rituals, workshops, and intensive meditation sessions (sesshin’e).

With a rich history, Soto Zen is not only a spiritual refuge for the Japanese community but has also expanded to serve a diverse group of practitioners across various cultural backgrounds. Today, it encompasses over 170 Zen centers and 350 priests, who engage in community-focused activities such as Zazen training, spiritual care in educational and healthcare settings, and fostering mutual understanding among its members. Soto Zen continues to be a beacon of mindfulness and harmony in contemporary society.
