About SourcingJournal
SourcingJournal is a brand that focuses on promoting circularity in the fashion industry. They have partnered with FabScrap and Drexel University's fashion program to educate students about the importance of circular design. FabScrap, a textile recycling body, provides a platform for brands to dispose of their production waste and unsalable merchandise.
They collect these items and process them at their sortation centers, where trims are removed and proprietary materials are downcycled for industrial applications. Usable fabric scraps are made available to students and designers, while larger fabric pieces are sold at a reduced cost on their website. Drexel University's fashion design program director, Lisa Hayes, believes that incorporating circularity into the curriculum challenges students to think creatively while also considering the environmental impact of their designs.
The partnership also involves working with Urban Outfitters' rental service, Nuuly, to disassemble rental garments at the end of their useful life and explore the challenges of designing with upcycled materials at scale. Overall, SourcingJournal aims to equip the next generation of fashion creatives with the knowledge and tools to drive sustainable change in the industry
