Southam Dojo

Southam Dojo LLC is an educational martial arts school in Myerstown, Pennsylvania, dedicated to the traditional Japanese arts of Kodokan Judo and Hakkoryu Jujutsu. Its approach focuses on learning and personal development rather than treating martial arts primarily as competitive sport. Instruction emphasizes practical self-defense and the thoughtful application of techniques, with classes for both arts held on Thursdays and Saturdays.

In Kodokan Judo, students explore flexible responses to physical attacks, adapting their actions to the situation and their abilities. Hakkoryu Jujutsu training emphasizes strategies for avoiding conflict where possible and using techniques that work with the body’s natural movements rather than relying on strength. The dojo describes martial arts as a therapeutic tool that can help round out students’ lives.

Located in the lower level of Friedens Lutheran Church, Southam Dojo is affiliated with the United States Judo Association and Hakkoryu Hombu Dojo. Students may pursue rank certification through those organizations.
