SC Wado Kai Karate

South Calgary Karate is a community-focused karate club serving southern Calgary since its founding in September 1994 by Sensei Heather Fidyk and Sensei Darren Fidyk. A member of Karate Alberta, the club welcomes beginners and experienced students, with programs for children from age three through adults. Its offerings include beginner karate classes, a “Just for Kicks” program for ages three to five, recreational training, and competitive training through a high-performance program.

Students have opportunities to progress through belt ranks, with testing held twice a year; black belt dan gradings take place annually in May in Alberta. Students who have reached orange belt or higher can also study Shindo, a short-staff discipline. Beyond regular classes, South Calgary Karate serves local communities through workshops and tournaments and offers a competitive club program.

The club’s philosophy emphasizes quality instruction in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment, while encouraging physical fitness, personal growth, respect, discipline, perseverance, community, and lifelong learning. It is based at 2223 146 Avenue SE in Calgary
