About South Coast Shorebirds
The South Coast Shorebird Recovery Program, established in 1999 by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), is dedicated to the conservation of threatened shorebird populations along the southern coast of New South Wales, Australia. The program's primary aim is to enhance breeding success and mitigate the factors contributing to the decline of these species.
A key part of their efforts involves conducting surveys, monitoring nesting sites, and implementing habitat management strategies to alleviate threats such as human interference, predation from domestic animals, and natural disasters. Engaging the community is fundamental; the program has fostered partnerships with over 100 volunteers, local councils, environmental groups, and government agencies to raise awareness and take action.
With dedicated coordinators stationed at Nowra and Narooma, the program not only focuses on recovery actions but also emphasizes public education campaigns, highlighting the biology and conservation needs of threatened shorebirds.
