Southern Guild, established in 2008 by Trevyn and Julian McGowan, is a gallery that represents contemporary artists from Africa and its diaspora. Their focus on the rich tradition of utilitarian and ritualistic art in Africa aims to further the continent’s contribution to global art movements. Southern Guild showcases excellence across both functional and contemporary art, pioneering the collectible design category on the continent. Additionally, they nurture new talent through educational projects, talks, mentorship initiatives, and a GUILD Residency international studio programme. The gallery's artists have had works acquired by prestigious institutions globally and have exhibited at renowned museums and galleries.
In February 2024, Southern Guild will expand internationally with a 5,000 sqft space opening in Melrose Hill, Los Angeles. With its commitment to artist development and propelling careers, Southern Guild continues to be a key player in the African creative ecosystem
