The Southwest Lobster Science Society (SWLSS) is an industry-led organization supporting the health and long-term viability of the lobster fishery and the communities that depend on it. Its at-sea bycatch monitoring program gives fishermen an opportunity to contribute to research and demonstrate stewardship of their fishery. SWLSS collects consistent, reliable data that Fisheries and Oceans Canada uses to track changes in the lobster resource and inform stock assessments and fishery management decisions. Its findings have also supported decisions about bait use and help maintain the fishery’s Marine Stewardship Council sustainability certification and market access.
The society offers registration and renewal for its monitoring program in Lobster Fishing Areas 33, 34, and 35. Its work includes at-sea sampling, lobster tagging to study movement and growth, water-temperature monitoring, and research on lobster molt quality. SWLSS has also supported ghost gear retrieval and contributed to the Canadian Lobster Research Network. With more than 1,600 successful sampling trips, over 121,000 traps, and 470,000 animals sampled, the organization provides information to help scientists understand changes in the ocean and fishery.
