Sovon Vogelonderzoek Nederland organiseert landelijke vogeltellingen en voert onderzoek uit ten behoeve van beheer, beleid en wetenschap. De tellingen worden uitgevoerd door ruim 8.000 waarnemers en gecoördineerd door een professionele staf. Naast coördinatie van dit signalerend onderzoek (monitoring van de vogelstand) voeren we ook verklarend onderzoek uit dat de gesignaleerde ontwikkelingen in de vogelstand tracht te doorgronden. Met andere woorden: we kijken niet alleen jaarlijks naar voor- of achteruitgang van vogels, maar we kijken ook naar het hoe en waarom; vaak in samenwerking met andere instituten en instellingen. In totaal werken er een 65-tal beroepskrachten bij Sovon. Deze zijn voor het grootste deel werkzaam in het kantoor van Sovon op het universiteitsterrein in Nijmegen.
