Sowams Heritage Area

Sowams Heritage Area is a historical initiative located in East Bay, Rhode Island, and nearby Massachusetts, dedicated to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Indigenous peoples and the pivotal events during the early colonial period. This area, once home to the Massasoit Ousamequin and the Pokanoket tribe, is known for its abundant natural resources, which made it a coveted location for both Native Americans and European settlers.

The initiative promotes awareness and appreciation of the original landscapes, offering insights into significant historical sites such as the Massasoit Burial Site, Burr's Hill, and numerous markers indicating the transformative encounters between Indigenous tribes and colonists. Sowams stands as a testament to the area's unique history, advocating for conservation and the protection of open spaces. By engaging the community through events, tours, and interactive maps, the Sowams Heritage Area fosters a deeper understanding of the cultural exchanges that shaped the region and emphasizes the importance of preserving its remaining natural beauty. Join the movement to honor and protect this invaluable heritage.
