About Science Panel for the Amazon
The Science Panel for the Amazon (SPA), founded on September 23, 2019, at the United Nations in New York, is the first regional high-level initiative dedicated to the Amazon rainforest. Launched in July 2020, the SPA consists of over 300 reputed scientists who merge Indigenous and local knowledge with Western scientific methodologies to address pressing issues in the Amazon. Their mission is to synthesize and communicate scientific insights to foster sustainable and equitable development in the region.
SPA offers a variety of publications, including the Amazon Assessment Reports and policy briefs, and provides expert-led solutions targeting diverse stakeholders such as academia, governments, and Indigenous communities. The organization aims to combat deforestation, expand protected areas, restore ecosystems, and promote a sustainable socio-bioeconomy while preserving the Amazon's ecological and cultural diversity for future generations.
