Spectrum Leisure Centre holds a special place in the community, with a rich history dating back to the 1920s when the Miners Welfare was first established. It was built to provide recreational facilities for the Mining Community of Willington and the surrounding areas, quickly becoming a vibrant hub where everyone felt welcome. In the 1970s, the Wear Valley District Council revamped the facilities and created the Spectrum Leisure Centre, which became a focal point for the community.
The centre even boasted a ski slope, officially opened by Franz Klammer, the reigning downhill World Champion. In the late 1990s, the centre faced challenges and the Miners Welfare Hall and ski slope were closed. However, thanks to the dedication of Ian and Alison Hirst, who formed the SLAM Community Development Trust, the centre was saved from closure.
The Trustees worked tirelessly to renovate and improve the facility, providing a community space that we can all be proud of. Today, Spectrum Leisure Centre offers a wide range of activities and services. With more than 90 hours of activities per week, there is something for everyone.
From a fully-equipped gym and personal training sessions to various exercise classes, such as BMX, BoxFit, Bootcamp, and Spin, the centre caters to individuals of all ages and fitness levels. In addition to sporting activities, the centre also hosts community events throughout the year, attracting hundreds of people. Despite the challenges posed by Covid and rising prices, Spectrum Leisure Centre remains committed to providing a variety of activities for the community.
The centre continues to develop and evolve, creating a sense of belonging and offering a welcoming space for everyone. Whether you're looking to get fit, have fun, or connect with others, Spectrum Leisure Centre is the place to be. Contact Details: Spectrum Leisure Centre Hunwick Lane, Willington, Co.
