About SPI-Birds
SPI-Birds (Studies of Populations of Individuals – Birds) is a grassroots research network connecting people who study and monitor populations of individually marked breeding birds. Its purpose is to support collaboration and make bird population data and research more accessible and reusable. Through its website, visitors can learn about the network, explore studies from around the world and access the SPI-Birds Repository, a data hub for metadata and information on individual-level bird studies. Data may be requested by researchers and other users, subject to consent from the relevant data custodians, who retain responsibility for their data.
SPI-Birds also provides practical resources for researchers and data custodians. The network defines a standard protocol for collecting individual-level bird data and develops tailored pipelines that convert different research groups’ data formats into a shared standard. Its services include data quality checks, documentation, guidance on repository use and data access, and information about terms of use and licensing. Pipelines are available through an R package and GitHub repository.
