The Deutsches Spielzeugmuseum in Sonneberg, operated by the Sonneberg district, welcomes visitors to Germany’s oldest toy collection. Celebrating 125 years in 2026, the museum explores the history, craftsmanship and design of toys, with displays spanning traditional Sonneberg playthings, toy publishers and home workers, mechanical toys, and the evolution of the play doll. Its permanent exhibitions are complemented by special exhibitions, collection highlights, restoration projects and an online collection.

Visitors can explore independently or use an audio guide and digital tour, while dedicated play areas make the museum engaging for children and families. The museum also offers guided tours, group visits, educational activities for kindergartens and schools, children’s birthday experiences and holiday programmes. Its library and Antje-Lode Archive support research into toys, puppets and related art, with visits available by appointment.
