About South Pacific Indigenous Engineering Students
South Pacific Indigenous Engineering Students (SPIES) is a student-led association at the University of Auckland, dedicated to supporting Māori and Pacific Island students studying engineering. With a focus on whanaungatanga, which means a sense of family and community, SPIES aims to provide a home away from home for its students. SPIES not only supports its members academically but also socially and culturally.
Through a variety of activities and experiences, SPIES creates a friendly and supportive environment, fostering a sense of belonging within the university. Additionally, SPIES is committed to promoting engineering to Māori and Pasifika communities, inspiring the next generation of engineers through school visits and workshops. With industry assistance and a growing cohort of graduates, SPIES is making a significant difference in the lives of young Māori and Pacific engineers.
