Southern Regional Area Health Education Center (SR-AHEC) supports health care education and access across its North Carolina service region. Its work focuses on recruiting, training, and retaining professionals who can provide high-quality care in local communities. SR-AHEC offers continuing professional development for people in allied, behavioral, and public health, as well as physicians, dentists, nurses, and pharmacists, helping them stay current with innovations and evidence-based practices.
The organization is home to Fayetteville’s first family medicine residency program, recruiting eight resident physicians each year. The three-year program supports residents in meeting board-certification requirements, while SR-AHEC aims to encourage graduates to remain in the region. Since 1974, more than 250 physicians have graduated, and almost half have stayed to work in the nine-county area.
SR-AHEC also provides patient services and practice support, and makes education resources available to health professionals. Its learning programs cover clinical topics such as stroke, heart attack, respiratory conditions, sepsis, nursing documentation, and emerging applications of artificial intelligence in nursing.
