About Sri Dalada Maligawa
Sri Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is a world-renowned place of worship located in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. This temple is of immense cultural and religious significance, as it enshrines the left tooth of Gautama Buddha. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988, Sri Dalada Maligawa attracts thousands of local and foreign devotees and tourists daily.
The architecture showcases a unique Kandyan style, with intricate carvings made of gold, silver, bronze, and ivory. Strategically situated near the ancient Royal Palace, the temple is surrounded by the Udawaththa Kelaya forest reserve, the Kandy Lake, and the Natha & Paththini Devala. Throughout history, the temple has been rebuilt multiple times due to destruction caused by various invasions.
Today, it stands as a symbol of Buddhist veneration and is under the watchful guard of the three chief custodians: the Mahanayake theros of Malwatta and Asgiriya chapters, and the lay custodian, the Diyawadana Nilame. Visit Sri Dalada Maligawa to experience the spiritual and cultural richness of this revered place
