The Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles (SSAR) is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1958 to advance research, conservation, and education concerning amphibians and reptiles. Recognized as the largest international herpetological society, SSAR supports a broad community of researchers, students, educators, and others interested in herpetology.
SSAR offers membership options and resources for people at different career stages, including students, seniors, families, and zoo keepers. Its activities include conferences, mentorship opportunities, awards, and educational resources such as fieldwork guidance, information about graduate study, and advice on becoming a herpetologist. The organization also promotes conservation through habitat protection resources, conservation genetics, and information on ecotourism and education.
Its publications are a central part of SSAR’s work. These include the peer-reviewed Journal of Herpetology, published quarterly since 1968, Herpetological Review, books, pamphlets, circulars, and standard English names for North American amphibians and reptiles. SSAR also provides a manuscript review service and shares society news, research updates, and opportunities to support herpetological scholarship and conservation.
