About stanfordhistorykent.org.uk
Stanford & Westenhanger History Society is a local history organisation dedicated to the villages of Stanford and Westenhanger, in Kent, near the edge of the North Downs. The villages have been shaped by centuries of change, from early Roman and medieval settlement to the influence of churches, Royal ownership of Westenhanger Castle, the railway, brickmaking and farming. With further development proposed for the area, including Otterpool garden town, the Society works to collect and preserve information about local history for future generations.
Its activities include building and churchyard surveys, historical research, archiving and cataloguing, regular talks, excursions and annual general meetings. Talks take place in the Stanford Parish Room at Folkestone Racecourse. The Society also welcomes photographs, memories and stories from people with connections to the villages, including former residents and pupils of the local school. Membership costs £10 per year, with renewal each January, and members receive free admission to talks, which usually cost £5.
