Starfall is an educational brand and program service of the Starfall Education Foundation, a publicly supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Its mission is to help every child learn to read, with engaging digital learning experiences for children in pre-kindergarten through grade 5 and above. Founded by Dr. Stephen Schutz, who experienced difficulty learning to read because of dyslexia, Starfall was designed around untimed, multisensory activities that let children see, hear, and interact with what they learn.
The platform’s free, teacher-developed Learn-to-Read program guides children through four stages: learning the ABCs, building phonics skills, exploring reading through art, music, and poetry, and developing fluency with fiction and nonfiction books. Its resources include educational games, animated movies, books, songs, and music, as well as math activities. Membership provides access to broader grade-level coverage, additional math topics such as geometry and measurement, and use across computers, tablets, and mobile devices. Memberships help keep the core reading program free and fund new educational content. Starfall also offers mobile apps for learning beyond the website.
