The Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance (STBA) is a UK alliance of organisations working to conserve and improve traditional buildings. It presents itself as a centre of expertise, sharing knowledge and guidance to support responsible retrofit and the Whole House Approach. Its work brings together research, policy, project activity and practical resources to help practitioners make informed decisions that respect heritage while improving building performance.
STBA offers guidance on retrofit materials, moisture behaviour and permeability, including publications on insulation and moisture management in traditional buildings. Its Guidance Wheel, Knowledge Centre and Survey Tool provide further support for assessing buildings and planning retrofit work. The alliance also contributes to collaborative research, events, webinars and sector discussions.
In the CALECHE project, STBA coordinates research, reviews existing tools and methodologies, engages stakeholders, and helps specify a decision-support system for historic renovation. This work addresses whole-building considerations, including heritage, energy, structure and monitoring. Through its resources and partnerships, STBA promotes evidence-led approaches that balance carbon reduction with material health, heritage value and long-term resilience.
