Stichting Steenbreek is a national knowledge and network organization dedicated to promoting sustainable greening in our living environment. We collaborate with affiliated municipalities, provinces, water boards, project developers, housing corporations, knowledge and educational institutions, and other social organizations. Our mission is to inspire everyone in the Netherlands to green our living and working environment.

We focus on several key themes. Firstly, we address the decreasing biodiversity of plants and animals globally—a trend that has significant consequences for ecosystems. By preserving and promoting native species, we stabilize ecosystems, which are essential for human existence. We also tackle the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions, such as prolonged droughts and heavy rainfall, through climate-adaptive measures that replace concrete with green spaces. These measures help absorb and manage rainwater, reduce the heat island effect, and alleviate strain on sewer systems.

Stichting Steenbreek actively involves residents in greening initiatives, such as creating facade gardens and planting tree basins. By doing so, we enhance community cohesion, creating green spaces that serve as meeting places and encourage physical activity and relaxation. Research suggests that nature positively impacts our health, reducing stress and enhancing concentration. Additionally, participating in community green projects can help combat loneliness.
