Stephanie McCurry

Stephanie McCurry is a historian, author, and Professor of History at Columbia University. Her work focuses on the American Civil War and Reconstruction, the nineteenth-century United States, the American South, and the history of women and gender. Her current research explores the human drama of Reconstruction in the United States and compares postwar societies and reconstruction processes across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

McCurry writes and speaks about the Confederacy, the memory of the Civil War, slavery, and their lasting legacies. She is available to speak with journalists on related topics, including Confederate monuments and memory, proslavery ideas, and slavery’s impact on the United States. Her books include Women’s War: Fighting and Surviving the American Civil War, which received the Josephine Miles Award from PEN Oakland. Her essays and media appearances offer historical perspectives on subjects such as the Confederacy and its political character. Through her teaching, writing, and public commentary, McCurry shares research on American history and the experiences of people affected by war and reconstruction.
