StepSister Press is an independent publishing imprint of Bridge Books, continuing under that name from 2023. Founded by Annie Heckman in 2007, the press was established to encourage conversation around emerging art, literature, education, and critical theory. It has developed projects and collaborations with artists and writers around the world, including the annual Fwd: Museums series.
StepSister Press publishes books that bring creative practice into dialogue with social, educational, and historical questions. Featured titles include Fwd: Museums—Death to Museums, by Lauren De Jesus and Therese Quinn, which examines how museums can be challenged by inequitable practices, limited representation, and a lack of transparency. Michael Workman’s Perfect Worlds: Artistic Forms & Social Imaginaries, Vol. 1 considers equality and the social ideas expressed through art-making. Excavating History: Artists Take on Historic Sites documents Rebecca Keller’s approach to site-specific interventions, teaching, collective work, and exhibitions in historic places. Through its publications, the imprint supports thoughtful exchange among artists, educators, writers, and readers interested in contemporary culture and critical inquiry.
