Sternwarte Bochum

Sternwarte Bochum is an educational center for space and environmental research, combining astronomy, space technology, and public learning. It receives, registers, processes, and interprets satellite data to support the study of Earth, and serves as a ground station for space probes. The organization also helped found ESERO Germany, the European Space Agency’s space education office. Its programs connect science and technology with sustainability and climate change, while making astronomy accessible through public sky observations, exhibitions, talks, and workshops.

Visitors can attend stargazing evenings, introductory astronomy courses, telescope workshops, children’s activities, and special lectures. The observatory also hosts cultural events and maintains a calendar of public programs. For those seeking a distinctive gift, Sternwarte Bochum offers symbolic star sponsorships: a star in a chosen constellation is dedicated to the recipient, while the purchase supports educational projects for children. The organization emphasizes that stars cannot actually be bought or officially named. Through its research activities and visitor experiences, Sternwarte Bochum invites people to explore the universe and understand how space-based technologies help us observe our planet.
