Sternwarte Essen

Walter-Hohmann-Sternwarte Essen e.V. is an astronomy association in Essen, Germany, welcoming people of nearly all ages to explore the sky. The observatory shares astronomy through public sky and solar observations, guided visits, lectures, courses, events and hands-on working groups. Visitors and members can learn about subjects ranging from the Sun, Moon and planets to stars, galaxies and space exploration.

Its activities include visual observing, astrophotography, radio astronomy, spectroscopy, variable-star monitoring and the study of micrometeorites. The association also operates an all-sky camera that automatically records meteors and other night-sky events. Its equipment includes several optical telescopes, among them a 56-centimetre Nasmyth-Cassegrain telescope, as well as a three-metre radio telescope used to map the Milky Way.

The observatory supports both practical learning and public engagement, with programmes and facilities for amateur astronomers and curious newcomers. It also welcomes enquiries about astronomy and space-related topics and supports Jugend forscht projects, although it does not offer internships.
