The Stiftung für das behinderte Kind is a German foundation dedicated to preventing and addressing physical and intellectual disabilities in childhood. Established in response to the thalidomide (Contergan) tragedy, it has worked for more than five decades to improve prevention, early detection and early treatment, supporting children and families before and after birth. Its initiatives provide information and guidance for expectant parents and promote early recognition, care and rehabilitation.
The foundation also supports scientific research, professional training and exchange among medical and therapeutic specialists, helping new findings and methods reach clinical practice. Its work has included supporting the introduction of general preventive examinations and the expansion of genetic counselling services in Germany. Through publications, educational resources, events and professional initiatives, it raises awareness of risks and prevention during pregnancy and childhood.
The foundation also presents the media prize “Prävention in der Schwangerschaft” for outstanding journalism and publications. Donations help fund its work, and contributions may be tax-deductible
