The Stiftung Deutsche Seemannsschule Hamburg is a maritime foundation dedicated to strengthening the training of seafaring professionals in Germany. Founded in 1862 by Hamburg shipowners and merchants, it has a long Hanseatic history. The foundation does not train seafarers itself; instead, it funds projects that improve the quality of instruction and help trainees prepare for careers in international shipping.
Its support includes essential equipment and resources that maritime training institutions cannot afford independently. Past funding has helped provide lifeboats, life rafts, immersion suits, rescue equipment, workshop machinery, and audiovisual teaching materials. The foundation also offers grants to close funding gaps. In addition, it recognizes the three highest-performing graduates of the ship mechanic examination each year with a one-time financial award to support their next steps, including further study.
Training schools can apply for project support, while eligible graduates may apply for recognition by submitting their examination certificate, résumé, and motivation. The foundation welcomes donations and endowments to expand its support.
