The Stille-Nacht-Historienspiele is a theatrical and musical event based in the twin towns of Oberndorf, in Austria’s Salzburg region, and Laufen, in Bavaria, Germany. It brings to life the origins of “Silent Night! Holy Night!”—the Christmas carol first performed in Oberndorf in 1818—and the story of its creators, Franz Xaver Gruber and Joseph Mohr. The programme combines a historical play with regional Advent songs, a shepherds’ play, and performances by local musicians and singers.
Visitors can also follow a lantern-lit, music-accompanied route along the Salzach River, with dramatic scenes at historic sites between Oberndorf and Laufen. Additional experiences include a historical introduction at the Silent Night Memorial Chapel, Advent markets, and an exhibition and video presentation about Gruber and Mohr. The main performance takes place at the Salzachhalle in Laufen.
The event celebrates the carol’s message of peace and its international reach, noting that it is sung in more than 300 languages and dialects. The website provides programme information and ticket details
