About StopFinningEU
StopFinningEU is a brand that strives to put an end to the trading of shark fins in Europe. They are driven by the European Citizens' Initiative Stop Finning - Stop the Trade, which received a positive response from the Commission in July 2023. StopFinningEU ensures that the voices of over 1.
1 million EU citizens who support the cause are heard and seeks to be at the forefront of the movement. Sharks play a crucial role in maintaining the health of the marine ecosystem and climate protection. They contribute to ocean-based tourism, fisheries, and food security.
The decline in shark populations, with over 100 million sharks killed annually and 167 species threatened with extinction, has serious consequences for the environment. StopFinningEU believes that a legally binding trade ban on shark fins is the only solution. They advocate for comprehensive impact assessments to cover all relevant sectors, going beyond the interests of the fishing industry.
By supporting a ban, StopFinningEU strives to protect biodiversity, ecosystems, and the sustainability of the blue economy and fisheries sector. Currently, some EU member states, such as Spain, Portugal, and France, are among the top shark-fishing nations, receiving subsidies from the EU. Inadequate legislation allows threatened and protected shark species to enter the market.
StopFinningEU emphasizes the need for additional trade legislation to ban the export, import, and transit of loose shark fins, closing the loophole that facilitates the illegal fin trade. By taking these steps, the EU can fulfill its conservation obligations, ensure a sustainable economy, and become part of the global community of states that are committed to preserving marine biodiversity. StopFinningEU believes that it is time for Europe to act and make a difference.
They invite supporters to join their movement, become a member, and contribute to the cause. Registration is open, and a newsletter is available to stay informed about the latest developments. Together, we can protect sharks and preserve the health of our oceans
