The Syttende Mai Festival, celebrated in Stoughton, Wisconsin, is a vibrant homage to Norwegian culture and heritage, actively engaging the community since 1952. Managed by the Stoughton Chamber of Commerce, this annual festival features a diverse array of events, including parades, arts and demonstrations, and performances that showcase both traditional and contemporary Norwegian customs.
Central to the festival are the Festival King and Queen, elected since 1969 to serve as ambassadors for the event. Nominated for their dedication to community service and cultural pride, the royal ambassadors don traditional bunads and lead various festivities, including a ceremonial kick-off at the Capitol building in Madison.
Festival-goers can enjoy delicious food and drink, participate in athletic competitions, and explore commemorative collectibles. The festival not only celebrates Norwegian traditions but also strengthens community ties and offers a welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors alike. Join in to experience the rich cultural tapestry of Stoughton at the Syttende Mai Festival!
