About Strathnaver Museum
Strathnaver Museum is an independent heritage museum on Scotland’s north coast, based in the former Parish Church of Columba in Bettyhill. Opened in 1976, it explores around 8,000 years of human life in north-west Sutherland, from the region’s ancient past and Norse and Gaelic heritage to the emergence of Clan Mackay, crofting culture and the Highland Clearances. Its collections include a Bronze Age burial beaker, a croft-house display, agricultural and fishing tools, militaria, Clan Mackay memorabilia and contemporary art. The nearby Farr Stone adds another dimension to the area’s Pictish history.
Visitors can explore the museum, take a tour and see exhibitions and events. Strathnaver Museum also supports heritage learning and research through family-history resources, enquiries, community projects, trails and digital experiences, including Museum Without Walls and the Venture North Mobile Heritage App. Its publications and other items are available through the museum shop. The museum preserves and shares local stories, culture and landscape for future generations, while inviting visitors to discover the history of Mackay Country and Sutherland.
