About Street Vendor Project
The Street Vendor Project (SVP) is a membership-based project dedicated to advocating for the rights of street vendors in New York City. With over 10,000 street vendors in the city, including hot dog vendors, flower vendors, book vendors, and street artists, SVP works tirelessly to support these small business owners, many of whom are immigrants and people of color. Despite their hard work, vendors face numerous challenges, such as limited access to vending licenses and unjust fines.
SVP educates vendors about their legal rights, holds meetings for collective action, publishes reports, and files lawsuits to raise public awareness about the invaluable contribution of vendors to the city. Additionally, SVP connects vendors with resources such as small business training and loans to help them grow their businesses. As part of the Urban Justice Center, a non-profit organization that provides legal representation and advocacy, SVP is funded through member dues and generous individual support.
