About Sugarcane Research Institute
The Sugarcane Research Institute (SRI) is a prestigious institution dedicated to the cultivation and processing of sugarcane in Sri Lanka. Established in 1981, SRI conducts comprehensive research and development programs to meet the technical and technological requirements of the country's sugar industry. Formerly operated by the Sri Lanka Sugar Corporation, SRI became an independent organization in 1984, operating under various ministries, including the Ministry of Plantation Industries.
SRI carries out its research and development activities through a network of sub-stations, centers, and laboratories, with its main research complex located in Uda Walawe. The institute also maintains a liaison office in Battaramulla, a quarantine farm in Hantane, an arrowing station in Deniyaya, and a pathology farm in Siyabalanduwa. To disseminate knowledge and technologies, SRI has established regional offices in Buttala, Siyabalanduwa, Badulla, Hingurana, and field offices in Kantale and Kilinochchi.
