About Sumerian Book
Sumerian Book is a scholarly digital project that reconstructs the history of Mesopotamia through its primary cuneiform sources. It presents a chronological and thematic account of roughly five thousand years, from the Ubaid period to the end of Achaemenid rule, covering civilizations including Sumer, Akkad, Babylonia and Assyria. Visitors can explore historical periods, browse themes, and read dossiers that examine popular claims against evidence from ancient tablets.
The project’s collection draws on the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative catalogue, with more than 102,000 entries indexed in the site’s reported corpus. Where available, tablets are presented with photographs, transliterations and translations. The material spans religion and myth, law, trade and accounting, astronomy and mathematics, daily life, writing and literature. Sumerian Book also uses an engine to help translate tablets, including texts not yet available in English, and shares information about the scope and limits of this work. The project invites contributions of tablet photographs and support for translation efforts, aiming to make ancient sources more accessible while keeping its historical narrative grounded in the evidence.
