About SUMEX
SUMEX (SUstainable Management in EXtractive industries) is a brand that aims to foster sustainable mineral production in the EU. They establish a sustainability framework for the extractive industries by considering the Sustainable Development Goals, the European Green Deal, and EU Social License to Operate considerations. SUMEX involves stakeholders from civil society, industry, academia, and government backgrounds across the EU.
Their framework is applied to the extractives value chain, analyzing the mineral and relevant economic, environmental, and social policy frameworks. They aim to find or develop good practices and tools for an open access toolkit that will be embedded in a broader Community of Practice (CoP) for capacity building. SUMEX stands out by involving Andalusia as a regional partner and covering two practical use cases involving construction and battery materials.
The brand is funded by the European Commission under the Grant Agreement number 101003622. SUMEX's approach includes the definition and operationalization of sustainable management, meta-analysis of previous and current project results, policy analysis and use cases, development of a digital toolkit, and the establishment of a Community of Practice. The expected impacts of SUMEX include a tested and validated definition of sustainable management criteria, expanded knowledge of policy integration, a toolkit for active learning and exchange, validated good practices and principles, establishment of a lasting Community of Practice, enhanced public and political acceptance of mineral extraction, and improved health and safety practices in the extractive industry.
SUMEX aims to be a one-stop-shop for up-to-date practices in the extractive industries, providing tools for the wider public
