Sumter Historic Cemetery is a nonprofit, perpetual-care cemetery operated by the Sumter Cemetery Association in Sumter, South Carolina. With its first documented burial dating to 1831 and the association formally established in 1857, the cemetery is a historic landmark and a place of remembrance for more than 13,000 people. Its grounds feature camellias, dogwoods, magnolias, and azaleas, and visitors are welcome.
The cemetery provides burial-related services, including lot sales, grave openings and closings, and monument placements. It accommodates traditional monument markers as well as flat bronze markers, and its grounds include mausoleums and designated areas such as Baby Land and a Confederate memorial area. A future veterans memorial site is also planned. The cemetery is the final resting place of more than 2,000 veterans and several notable South Carolinians. Income from cemetery services and donations supports current operations, while a portion is placed in a perpetual-care fund for future maintenance. With no shareholders or investors, the association dedicates its resources to caring for the historic grounds and those interred there.
