About Sunken Ships OBX
Sunken Ships of the Outer Banks is an educational website dedicated to documenting vessels lost along the coast of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Its coverage spans from the 1500s through World War II, organizing shipwreck information by historical period to help visitors explore the region’s maritime past. The project grew from its creator’s interest in a map of Outer Banks ship losses and a longstanding enthusiasm for history. A social studies teacher, the founder later developed the website during doctoral studies at the University of Delaware and continues to research and add information.
The site offers historical articles and shipwreck features, including stories about wrecks revealed along the coast, vessels visitors can see, and ships resting offshore. Its “Lost Ships” sections provide a timeline-based way to browse shipwrecks, while a tribute page honors ships lost in the area. Sunken Ships of the Outer Banks also invites people with family connections to the vessels to share their stories, making community contributions part of its ongoing historical research.
