Sunnyside Farm is a historic horse farm in Paris, Kentucky, where the traditions of Thoroughbred breeding and Kentucky bourbon intersect. Its story dates to 1807, when the property was settled by Jacob Spears and became home to a distillery operated by his family. Sunnyside’s bourbon heritage is associated with the discovery that aging whiskey in charred oak barrels improved its flavor.
The farm later became known for horses, beginning with Thoroughbred and trotting-horse breeding in the nineteenth century. In 1963, veterinarian Dr. Robert Copelan and horseman John Q.
Thornbury purchased Sunnyside and developed it as a breeding, breaking, surgery, and recuperation enterprise. Over the decades, the farm has handled notable champions and stakes winners, including Dahlia, Storm Cat, Danzig, Tabasco Cat, and Palace Malice. Today, Sunnyside is run by second-generation horseman Jeffrey D.
Thornbury and continues to provide boarding, breaking, and recuperation services. Set on Central Kentucky land recognized for its suitability for raising horses, Sunnyside maintains a longstanding connection to the region’s equine heritage and history
