Hawaii Lifeguard Surf Instructors (HLSI) is a family-owned Native Hawaiian surf school serving Kailua-Kona on Hawai‘i Island since 1998. Rooted in local culture and a connection to the ocean, the school offers private, safety-focused surf instruction led by professional Hawaiian lifeguards and watermen certified by the American Red Cross. Classes combine land-based coaching on paddling, pop-ups, and ocean safety with guided surfing at Kahaluʻu Bay, with equipment, rashguards, and water footwear provided.
Guests can choose one-on-one lessons for surfers ages five and up, private duos for ages ten and up, or small private groups of three to four for ages twelve and up. A one-hour introductory course is also available for solo and duo surfers. Instruction is tailored to different experience levels, from beginner introductions to coaching for more experienced surfers. HLSI emphasizes swimming ability and readiness for physical activity, with private coaching recommended for participants needing additional in-water support.
