Surfstainable is an open project focused on ocean literacy, bringing together people from diverse fields to connect science, creativity and environmentally mindful ways of living. The group describes itself as a “shoal” working to create scientific data, eco-sustainable products, creative experiments and research. Its approach combines knowledge and engagement with research, eco-design and educational activities, using new methods, tools and concepts to explore solutions that respect the environment.

Surfstainable’s work is aligned with broader efforts to protect ocean and water ecosystems. The project was selected by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development for 2021–2030, a framework supporting the science needed for a healthy ocean. It also contributes to the European Union Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030,” with aims connected to protecting and restoring marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity. Based in Barcelona, Surfstainable invites people to join its collaborative project and take part in exploring creative, research-led approaches to ocean sustainability.
