Sussex County Government is the primary governing body for over 200,000 residents in Delaware's largest and southernmost county. With its expansive 938 square miles, the county boasts the largest land area and ranks second in population size in the state. The County Council, consisting of five elected members, leads the government, while County Administrator oversees all offices and departments.

Established in 1970, this Council-Administrator form of government aims to address the diverse interests and issues within the constituency. Residents outside towns and cities rely on the County government for several essential local services, including land use regulations, building permits, 911 communications, paramedic services, property assessment and tax collection, community housing, economic development, airport/industrial park management, public sewer/water services, marriage and civil union licensing, estate probate, dog licensing, and library services. While certain functions like law enforcement, roads, public health, and waste disposal fall under municipal or state government, public education is managed by independent local school boards.
