Sustainable Wairarapa

Sustainable Wairarapa Incorporated is a charitable society that promotes sustainability across the Wairarapa. It encourages individuals, businesses, local and regional authorities, and other organisations to foster and adopt sustainable practices. The society coordinates restoration projects, scientific research, environmental campaigns, and public presentations, connecting community action with practical resources and learning.

Its current projects include a long-tailed bat, or pekapeka-tou-roa, survey; the Mākoura Stream Fish Passage and Eco-corridor Project; and Electrify Wairarapa. The society also supports bat monitoring, including efforts to expand the use of sensitive AR5 monitors to detect bat activity. It has hosted an educational map of Masterton’s streams, underground diversions, and locations where tuna (eels) can be found, providing a free resource for education, hapū, iwi, and non-profit organisations.

Sustainable Wairarapa shares environmental news, publishes email newsletters, and lists community events. People can get involved by donating, sponsoring its work, or becoming members. Through these activities, it brings together local communities and organisations to support a more sustainable Wairarapa.
