Svenska Vitterhetssamfundet (SVS) is a Swedish nonprofit association founded in 1907 to publish classic Swedish literature in scholarly, textually reliable editions. Its work preserves and shares the country’s literary heritage, covering authors whose works were written after the Reformation, from Georg Stiernhielm to Harry Martinson. The association has published nearly 200 volumes by close to 40 authors, typically sending one to three volumes to members each year.
Its publications also include facsimile editions of literary calendars, anthologies, conference proceedings, an editorial handbook, annual meeting speeches, and yearly reports. SVS appoints editors to prepare its editions, supported by a part-time editorial team and a five-member editorial committee that helps resolve textual and scholarly questions. Editorial guidance is set out in a handbook on text-critical publishing.
The association’s publishing and operating costs are partly supported by grants from funds and foundations. Through its publications and editorial standards, SVS provides readers and researchers with carefully prepared access to important works in Swedish literature
