About Swachh Bharat Mission
The Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen (SBM-G) is an initiative by the Government of India, launched in 2014, aimed at revolutionizing sanitation across the nation. This transformative mission seeks to eradicate open defecation by fostering nationwide participation, marking it as the largest behavioral change movement in the world. By 2019, SBM-G successfully constructed over 100 million individual household toilets and declared more than 600,000 villages open defecation free, significantly improving public health and safety.
In its second phase, launched post-2019, the mission focuses on maintaining the open defecation free status while implementing comprehensive solid and liquid waste management programs across rural India. Supported by a significant investment of Rs. 1.40 lakh crores, SBM-G also promotes innovative cleanliness campaigns and capacity building initiatives.
The mission plays a crucial role in enhancing women's safety, reducing health costs, and conserving the environment. With educational endeavors like the Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee National Institute of Water and Sanitation, SBM-G embodies India's commitment to sustainable public health and community-driven change.
